Mai Tai – Trader Vic’s 1944

Make no mistake, this is the REAL Mai Tai.  Anything with pineapple juice, anything red, anything that tastes sweet and sticky is not a Trader Vic’s Mai Tai.  Lesser bars will try to pass off these concoctions to you as the real thing but insist on the best, or better yet, make it yourself!

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz Amber Martinique Rum
  • 1 oz Dark Jamaican Rum
  • 3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/4 oz Orgeat Syrup
  • 1/4 oz Rich Simple Syrup
  • 1/2 oz Orange Curacao

Add all ingredients in a shaker and fill with crushed ice.  Shake vigorously until the tin is frosty.  Pour into a rocks glass, top off with additional crushed ice and garnish with a lime shell half and a sprig of mint.  Make sure you spank the mint on your hand first to wake up the aroma.

True fact … did you know the lime shell represent an island and the mint is a palm tree?  All I know is that the drink is not as good without the mint.

Where did I find it?  It is literally everywhere on the internet.  Here’s a clip I like from “Spikes Breezeway Cocktail Hour” a.k.a. the Hula Girls channel on You tube.
